Location Branding Sparks Debate as Critics Insist Effurun Is Not Warri
Effurun, Delta State
Controversy has erupted following the cancellation of a scheduled event featuring Nigerian comedian and entertainer Anita Eselemo, popularly known as Realwarripikin, at the Monarchy Event Center in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The controversy centres on the branding of the event, which was advertised as “Realwarripikin Live in Warri”, despite the venue being located in Effurun.
Critics of the event argued that Effurun should not be described simply as Warri and demanded that the promotional materials either identify the event as “Realwarripikin Live in Effurun” or relocate the event to an actual venue in Warri.
According to the statement circulating online, the organisers were allegedly given the option of correcting the location on the promotional materials or moving the event to Warri. The statement claims that the event was subsequently cancelled.
However, the same statement also acknowledges reports that low ticket sales may have been the actual reason for the cancellation. This claim has not been independently established.
The controversy has generated a wider debate over geographical identity, cultural ownership and the use of the name “Warri” in describing locations within Delta Central.
Those behind the criticism argue that Effurun is a distinct Urhobo community in Uvwie Local Government Area, and that its identity should not be subsumed under the name Warri.
They further contend that the distinction is particularly important because Warri is associated with Warri South Local Government Area in Delta South Senatorial District, while Uvwie is located in Delta Central Senatorial District.
The dispute has also attracted references to Realwarripikin’s family background. Critics have linked her to Collins Eselemo, whom they describe as an Ijaw man from Ndoro, although these assertions concerning her family background and ethnicity have not been independently verified by IBN News.

The central issue, however, remains the naming of the event and whether the use of “Live in Warri” for a show held in Effurun was appropriate.
Supporters of the Effurun identity have continued to emphasise the distinction with the slogan:
“EFFURUN IS EFFURUN.”
The development highlights the sensitivity surrounding the use of the name Warri, particularly in relation to neighbouring communities with distinct local, ethnic and administrative identities.
IBN News understands that further clarification from the event organisers or Realwarripikin could help establish the actual reason for the cancellation and address the controversy surrounding the event’s location branding.
IBN NEWS will continue to monitor the issue and bring you verified updates as they emerge.
