Former Sports Minister Defends Criticism of Tinubu, Says His Position Is Driven by Concern for Nigeria
Abuja, Nigeria | August 8, 2026
Former Minister of Youth and Sports and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Solomon Dalung, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the worst president in Nigeria’s history, while defending his frequent criticism of the administration.
Dalung made the remarks in response to criticism from some members of the All Progressives Congress, who accused him of being excessively critical of the Tinubu administration.
According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune, Dalung rejected the allegation that his criticism was motivated by personal hostility or political bitterness.
The former minister said his habit of challenging government policies did not begin with the Tinubu administration, insisting that he has consistently spoken against decisions and policies he believes are detrimental to Nigerians.
Dalung argued that those accusing him of being overly critical should examine his political record and consider his positions on previous administrations before drawing conclusions about his current stance.
He also recalled his involvement in the formation and mobilisation of support for the All Progressives Congress before the party came to power.
According to Dalung, he travelled across the country campaigning for the APC and encouraging Nigerians to support the party’s promise of change.
He therefore maintained that his current criticism of President Tinubu should not be interpreted as a personal vendetta, but rather as part of his long-standing approach to national issues.
In his words:
“Well, you don’t expect the APC to say anything different from what they have said. But what exactly is their parameter for concluding that I am too critical of the president? By what standard? I have been like this since 2005. If they are only now complaining because of this president, then it simply means this president is the worst in history, and that is why I am more critical of him than any other president.”
Dalung’s comments are likely to generate fresh reactions from supporters of the Tinubu administration and opposition figures, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former minister is now a prominent figure within the African Democratic Congress, one of the political platforms positioning itself as an alternative to the ruling APC ahead of the next presidential election.
The Tinubu administration has continued to defend its economic and governance reforms, while opposition parties and critics have raised concerns over the cost of living, economic hardship, security and other national issues.
As political activities ahead of 2027 gather momentum, statements from opposition figures such as Dalung are expected to remain a major feature of Nigeria’s political discourse.
