EWATTO, Edo State — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, alongside the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, has commissioned a newly completed medical centre in Ewatto, Esan South-East Local Government Area, in a development expected to improve access to healthcare for residents of the community and neighbouring areas.
The facility, known as the Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea Medical Centre, Ewatto Annex, was made possible through the philanthropy of Chief Dr. Leemon Agbonjagwe Ikpea, whose investment in the project has been recognised as a contribution to healthcare development and community wellbeing.

The medical centre is intended to bring essential and specialist medical services closer to residents who might otherwise have to travel considerable distances to access treatment. Its establishment also highlights the potential role of private philanthropy in supporting public healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities.
The facility is designed to operate as an annex of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, providing a connection to an established specialist medical institution and a framework for professional clinical management.

The centre reportedly includes male, female and paediatric wards, operating theatres, an accident and emergency unit, labour and postnatal wards, diagnostic services, including X-ray and CT scan facilities, physiotherapy services and ambulances. Supporting facilities include consultants’ offices, administrative buildings, standby power supply, a restaurant and laundry services.

Residential quarters for doctors and a police post were also reported to be under construction.
The commissioning marks a significant milestone for Ewatto, but the long-term value of the facility will depend on the availability of qualified medical personnel, reliable power and water supply, adequate funding, essential medicines, equipment maintenance and effective management.
The Edo State Government said the project represents an investment in lives, hope and the future of healthcare delivery. It commended Chief Dr. Ikpea for his contribution and described the project as an example of how partnerships between government and private individuals can support community development.

The administration also urged residents and healthcare professionals to protect and maintain the facility, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public-serving infrastructure.
The participation of Professor Pate places the project within the wider discussion about collaboration between federal institutions, state governments and private stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery. However, the precise operational and management arrangements for the centre should be confirmed by the relevant authorities.

For residents of Ewatto and surrounding communities, the most important test will be whether the medical centre delivers accessible, reliable and affordable healthcare. Modern infrastructure is an important foundation, but consistent staffing, well-maintained equipment and dependable clinical services will determine the facility’s impact.
The commissioning adds a new healthcare asset to Edo State and creates an opportunity to expand medical services closer to communities in Esan South-East. Sustained commitment from the relevant authorities, hospital management and community stakeholders will be essential to ensuring that the facility fulfils its intended purpose.
