LAGOS, NIGERIA — Founder of The Headies, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised artistes who submit entries to foreign award bodies but fail to submit their works for consideration at Nigeria’s premier music awards, The Headies.
Animashaun expressed his displeasure in a social media post, arguing that some artistes actively pursue recognition from international award organisers, even when those organisations may have little interest in their work, but overlook local platforms before complaining about not receiving nominations.
“Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated. Funny!!!” he wrote.
His comments have reignited conversations about the relationship between Nigerian artistes and local award platforms, particularly questions surrounding participation, recognition and the importance of supporting homegrown entertainment institutions.
The Headies remains one of Nigeria’s prominent music award ceremonies, recognising achievements across different genres and categories within the country’s music industry.
Animashaun’s remarks suggest that artistes who want consideration for nominations should take advantage of the submission process rather than expect recognition without entering their works.
The post has also raised a broader question about whether Nigerian artistes give sufficient attention to local award platforms while pursuing international recognition.
