Drew Uyi Says Expanded Tournament Has Raised Competition, Urges NFF to Prioritise Long-Term Football Development
A FIFA-licensed football agent, Drew Uyi, has described the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a tournament that has exceeded expectations despite officiating controversies and a series of surprising results.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Uyi said the expanded 48-team format had strengthened the competition by giving more nations the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
He noted that the tournament has highlighted football’s global appeal, with co-hosts the United States, Canada and Mexico providing a fitting atmosphere for the world’s biggest football event.
Uyi, however, expressed concern over inconsistent officiating, particularly the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), saying some decisions have continued to generate debate.
He described Brazil’s early elimination as one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, adding that Norway has emerged as the surprise package through tactical discipline, physical intensity and the quality of its players.
The football agent also praised Spanish youngster Lamine Yamal, saying his impressive performances have further enhanced his profile, leadership credentials and market value on the global stage.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, Uyi urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to adopt a long-term approach by investing in grassroots football, coaching education, sports science and a unified football philosophy across all national teams.
Looking ahead to the latter stages of the competition, Uyi tipped France to lift the World Cup trophy, citing the team’s blend of experience, youthful talent, tactical flexibility and squad depth, while acknowledging Spain as another outstanding contender.
