President Urges Osun APC Leaders to End Internal Disputes and Unite Behind Oyebamiji Ahead of August 15 Poll
Abuja, Nigeria | August 9, 2026
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly expressed disappointment over the failure of former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, to secure a second term in office, saying the former governor had sufficient resources available to win his re-election but failed to utilise them effectively.
According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Tinubu made the remark during an emergency meeting with about 76 All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders from Osun State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting reportedly came amid concerns over divisions within the Osun APC ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
Party leaders who attended the meeting were said to have raised concerns about internal disagreements and what some described as the marginalisation of certain party stakeholders.
Among the issues reportedly presented to the President was an allegation that federal appointments allocated to Osun State had largely favoured members of Oyetola’s political camp, leaving other APC leaders dissatisfied.
According to one of the former lawmakers who reportedly attended the meeting, the party leaders warned that continued internal divisions could negatively affect the APC’s chances at the forthcoming election.
President Tinubu was said to have urged the stakeholders to put their differences aside and concentrate on securing victory for the party.
While discussing the APC’s previous electoral setbacks in the state, the President reportedly referred to Oyetola’s unsuccessful attempt to retain the governorship in the 2022 Osun State governorship election.
Tinubu was quoted as saying:
“Oyetola had all the resources to win his re-election. But he couldn’t use them.”
The President reportedly reminded the party leaders that Oyetola’s defeat should not be viewed simply as an individual loss but as a setback for the APC as a political organisation.
He therefore urged party stakeholders to reconcile their differences, close ranks and work collectively ahead of the August 15 election.
Tinubu is also said to have called on the party leaders to provide the necessary support for the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, as the party seeks to regain control of Osun State.
The meeting comes at a critical period for the Osun APC, with the governorship election expected to be closely contested.
The reported comments have also reignited discussions about the circumstances surrounding the APC’s defeat in the 2022 election and the internal political dynamics that have continued to shape the party’s fortunes in Osun State.
The APC is seeking to consolidate its support across the state, while opposition parties are also intensifying their campaigns ahead of the poll.
