GUMI CONDEMNS ALLEGED BRIDGE VANDALISM IN LAGOS, CALLS IT “PURE WICKEDNESS”

Islamic Cleric Reacts to Video Allegedly Showing Scavengers Removing Iron Rods From Bridge Structure

Lagos, Nigeria | August 8, 2026

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has condemned the alleged vandalism of the bridge linking Alakija and FESTAC in Lagos State, describing the reported destruction as a serious threat to public safety and infrastructure.

Gumi reacted to a video circulating on social media which allegedly showed suspected scavengers breaking portions of the concrete pillars beneath the bridge in an attempt to remove iron rods embedded within the structure.

The cleric expressed concern that the alleged removal of the reinforcement materials could weaken the structural integrity of the bridge and potentially put the lives of motorists, commuters and other members of the public at risk.

In a post on Facebook on Saturday, Gumi rejected the suggestion that poverty or economic hardship could justify the alleged destruction of public infrastructure.

He described the reported action as deliberate vandalism and accused those involved of showing disregard for the consequences their activities could have on other members of society.

Gumi said the issue was particularly disturbing because similar incidents of vandalism involving public infrastructure have reportedly been witnessed in different parts of Nigeria.

According to the cleric, the alleged destruction of infrastructure for the purpose of extracting and selling valuable materials reflects a deeper societal problem that requires urgent attention.

Reacting to the video, Gumi wrote:

“This is not poverty but pure wickedness. And it’s all over the nation having animals in human skin.”

The comments have generated reactions online, with discussions focusing on the activities of scavengers, the protection of public infrastructure and the need for stronger enforcement against vandalism.

The incident also highlights concerns over the security and maintenance of major public infrastructure, particularly structures where the removal of critical components could create serious safety risks.

Authorities have yet to publicly confirm the identities of the individuals seen in the video or announce any arrests in connection with the alleged incident.

IBN NEWS will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as authorities respond to the allegations.
