AAC presidential candidate returns after US trip, heads to Abuja amid ongoing legal proceedings
LAGOS, Nigeria — Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States as he prepares to resume his 2027 presidential campaign.
Sowore returned on Sunday following a trip to the US during which he reunited with his family and held engagements with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders.
According to a statement from the AAC campaign, Sowore also participated in an international solidarity march for Palestine in the United States and discussed diaspora participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.
He has said an AAC administration would seek to implement voting rights for Nigerians living abroad if elected in 2027. That is a campaign position, rather than an existing electoral arrangement.
Sowore was expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before proceeding to Abuja, where his ongoing legal proceedings are based.
His return comes as the cybercrime-related case against him continues at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The State Security Service is prosecuting him over allegations arising from social media posts concerning President Bola Tinubu, allegations Sowore has contested.
Recent court proceedings have included disputes over bail, defence proceedings and the continuation of the case. The SSS also indicated in August that it intended to seek an adjournment of the trial until after the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore’s return is expected to mark the next phase of his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 election, with the AAC saying he plans to engage communities and present the party’s political programme to voters across the country.
The party’s campaign describes its proposed agenda in terms of political, social and economic transformation, while Sowore has continued to call for major changes to Nigeria’s political system.
His return places the AAC presidential campaign back in Nigeria as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to intensify.
