KANO RECORDS STEADY PROGRESS IN YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNANCE – GOVERNOR’S AIDE

Yusuf Administration Has Empowered Young People Through Strategic Appointments and Inclusive Policies, Says OGP Adviser

Abuja, Nigeria

The Senior Special Assistant on Open Government Partnership (OGP) to the Kano State Governor, Musaddiq Kabir Adam, says the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has made significant progress in promoting youth participation in governance through strategic appointments and inclusive policymaking.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Adam said the Kano State Government has moved beyond symbolic youth inclusion by creating meaningful opportunities for young people to contribute to governance, public administration and policy development.

According to him, the administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to youth empowerment by appointing young people into key government positions, noting that about 65 per cent of members of the state’s cabinet are youths.

Adam described his appointment as Senior Special Assistant on Open Government Partnership as a reflection of the governor’s confidence in the capacity of young leaders to drive transparency, accountability and citizen engagement.

He noted that, to the best of his knowledge, he remains the only Senior Special Assistant on Open Government Partnership in the country, describing the position as evidence of the administration’s commitment to youth inclusion.

The governor’s aide explained that through the Open Government Partnership framework, young people are actively involved in policy consultations, budget discussions, civic engagement programmes and accountability initiatives.

He added that the OGP Secretariat collaborates closely with civil society organisations, youth groups, innovation hubs and development partners to ensure governance remains transparent, participatory and inclusive.

Adam further disclosed that one of the administration’s major initiatives is the Youth Development Bill, which is currently before the Kano State House of Assembly.

According to him, once passed into law, the bill will provide a stronger legal framework for youth participation, representation, empowerment and development across Kano State.

He also stated that young innovators, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations are being encouraged to contribute to governance through innovation, policy advocacy, budget monitoring and public accountability initiatives.

Calling on young Nigerians to become active participants in nation-building, Adam urged them to engage in public consultations, monitor government projects, volunteer in community development activities and interact constructively with public institutions.

He also advised youths to reject violence, political apathy, misinformation and the misuse of social media, while embracing dialogue, innovation, patriotism and accountability.

According to him, the younger generation has a responsibility not only to criticise society but also to contribute actively to building a transparent, accountable, inclusive and prosperous nation.

IBN NEWS will continue to monitor developments in governance and youth empowerment across Nigeria.
