Veteran Actor Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Nollywood mourns legendary actor as family announces passing after more than five decades on stage and screen

LAGOS — Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewunmi Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in a joint Instagram post by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewunmi Jacobs (MFR) 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026,” the family said.

The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.

Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and became one of the most recognisable figures in Nigerian theatre, television and film, with a career spanning more than five decades.

He built his career across stage, television and film in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, becoming known for his commanding voice, distinctive screen presence and performances in a wide range of productions.

Among the productions associated with Jacobs are The Dogs of War, Vigilante, Omeruah’s Advice, Blood Diamond and Dry.

Beyond acting, Jacobs and Joke Silva established the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, through which they contributed to the training and development of younger generations of Nigerian performers.

Jacobs’ contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry earned him several recognitions during his career, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR.

His death marks the end of an era for a performer whose career helped bridge Nigeria’s traditional theatre culture with the modern film and television industry.

News of his passing comes less than three months after Silva celebrated his 84th birthday in July. At the time, she described him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and expressed gratitude for his life.

Jacobs and Silva had been married for decades and remained one of Nigeria’s best-known acting couples. Together, they played significant roles not only as performers but also as mentors and promoters of professional training in the Nigerian performing arts.

The veteran actor’s death is expected to trigger tributes from colleagues, filmmakers, theatre practitioners and admirers across Nigeria and beyond.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced by the family as of the time of filing this report.

Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, children and grandchildren.

IBN News reports that Jacobs leaves behind a career that spans generations and a legacy deeply connected to the development of Nigeria’s modern performing arts industry.
