Nigeria set up Cameroon showdown after ruthless attacking display keeps title defence on track
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match, producing their most convincing performance of the tournament.
The nine-goal thriller saw the defending African champions overwhelm the Egyptians with an outstanding attacking display, scoring six goals to seal qualification for the knockout stage in style.
The Super Falcons took control of the contest from the opening stages and never looked back, displaying pace, creativity and clinical finishing against an Egyptian side that struggled to cope with Nigeria’s attacking pressure.
Three of Nigeria’s goals came from the penalty spot as the Falcons capitalised on Egypt’s defensive mistakes, while their open-play attacking football underlined why they remain one of Africa’s strongest women’s teams.
The emphatic victory was a major response after a difficult group-stage campaign and ensured Nigeria advanced to the last eight with renewed confidence.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade led by example, while the team’s attacking unit consistently troubled the Egyptian defence throughout the encounter. The Falcons also showed resilience after Egypt found the net twice, quickly restoring their dominance each time.
With qualification secured, Nigeria will now face regional rivals Cameroon in what promises to be one of the biggest quarter-final clashes of the tournament. Cameroon also reached the knockout stage after progressing from their group, setting up another fierce rivalry between two of Africa’s traditional football powers.
The Super Falcons are chasing another continental crown and remain among the favourites to lift the WAFCON trophy, having established themselves as the most successful team in the history of the competition.
Football analysts say the six-goal performance will boost the confidence of the Nigerian squad ahead of the knockout rounds, where every match will determine who stays in the race for the African title and qualification opportunities attached to the tournament.
Attention will now shift to the quarter-final showdown against Cameroon as the Super Falcons continue their quest to retain their continental crown and once again prove why they remain the standard-bearers of women’s football in Africa.
