REPS DEMAND COMPENSATION FOR NIGERIANS HIT BY SOUTH AFRICA XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS

Lawmakers Move To Document Deaths, Losses And Abandoned Properties

The House of Representatives has moved to ensure justice for Nigerians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa by calling for a comprehensive investigation into the deaths, injuries, financial losses and properties abandoned during the violence.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Babajimi Benson, during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

The lawmakers directed the House Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to document the human and economic losses suffered by Nigerians, compile a full inventory of abandoned properties and recommend diplomatic and legal steps that could lead to compensation for victims.

The House also urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement with the South African Government, pursue legal options where necessary and strengthen bilateral cooperation to guarantee the safety and protection of Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa.

Lawmakers said a proper assessment of the damage caused by the repeated xenophobic attacks is necessary to support affected Nigerians and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The move comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians residing in South Africa, where previous waves of xenophobic violence have claimed lives, destroyed businesses and forced many Nigerians to flee, leaving behind homes and investments.

The House maintained that Nigerians living abroad deserve adequate protection and that every lawful effort should be made to seek justice, accountability and possible compensation for victims of the attacks.
