TRUMP COMMENDS TINUBU’S LEADERSHIP, PLEDGES STRONGER US-NIGERIA SECURITY PARTNERSHIP

US President Praises Tinubu’s Fight Against Terrorism, Reaffirms Commitment To Bilateral Defence Cooperation

United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership and commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly the violence affecting communities across the country.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, released by the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In the letter, President Trump thanked President Tinubu for his correspondence and praised his determination to confront terrorism and strengthen national security.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities. It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump wrote.

The US President reaffirmed the strategic importance of the relationship between both countries, noting that Nigeria and the United States share a common objective of combating terrorism across West Africa.

He highlighted the implementation of the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, describing it as a strong framework for enhancing military collaboration, intelligence sharing and security operations.

Trump also disclosed that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Nigerian Armed Forces with advanced training, intelligence and operational capabilities aimed at improving the country’s fight against terrorism.

“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland and ensure the safety and security of citizens,” he stated.

The letter further expressed optimism about continued cooperation between both governments throughout Trump’s presidency.

The Presidency said the correspondence reflects the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in the areas of security, defence cooperation and counter-terrorism.

Recent collaboration between both countries has included intelligence sharing, joint military planning and specialised training under the Joint Working Group established by the National Security Advisers of Nigeria and the United States. Officials say the partnership has contributed to several successful counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.
