OPINION: UMAHI HAS THE RIGHT TO CALL PETER OBI TO A DEBATE — WISDOM NWEDENE

Commentator Says Nigerians Should Use Every Opportunity to Assess Former Public Office Holders

Political commentator Wisdom Nwedene has argued that former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, should accept the invitation by Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for a public debate on their records in office.

In an opinion shared on social media, Nwedene alleged that Obi had previously criticised and mocked the Minister by taking photographs on poorly maintained roads, while overlooking ongoing road projects being executed by the Federal Ministry of Works.

According to him, Umahi is justified in calling for a debate to allow both men present their achievements as former governors.

“You can’t mock me and expect me to keep quiet,” Nwedene wrote, adding that Obi should honour the invitation in his capacity as a former governor rather than as a presidential candidate.

He further argued that while there are ongoing road projects under Umahi’s supervision, Obi chose to highlight only roads in poor condition.

Nwedene also urged Nigerians to seize every opportunity to question current and former public office holders about their performance while in office, saying accountability should remain central to public service.

The opinion comes amid increasing political exchanges between members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition figures as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
