RIYOM, Plateau State — One Fulani herder has been killed and another injured following an attack on herders in Tishal Village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, according to security sources cited in a report published on Tuesday.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, when troops of Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace, deployed in Ganawuri, responded to reports of an attack on herders in the community.
According to the report by security-focused publication Zagazola Makama, the troops’ intervention forced the suspected attackers to flee the scene.
The soldiers subsequently discovered that one of the victims had been killed, while another had sustained a gunshot wound.
The injured herder was evacuated to the Primary Health Care Centre in Ganawuri for medical attention, while the deceased’s body was handed over to Fulani community leaders for burial.
Security sources said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The assailants were suspected of belonging to a Berom militia, although the allegation had not been independently established.
Four Suspects Reportedly Arrested
In a related development, a separate report published on October 20 said troops of Operation Enduring Peace had arrested four suspected militia members over an alleged attack on herders in Trimishal Village, Ganawuri, also in Riyom Local Government Area.
According to the report, the suspects were apprehended at about 1:20 p.m. on October 19 and were being held in military custody for further investigation.
However, the available reports did not conclusively establish whether the four arrests were directly connected to the fatal attack in Tishal Village.
The reported incident comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where attacks involving farming and herding communities have resulted in deaths, injuries and destruction of livelihoods.
Earlier this month, reports documented other deadly incidents involving members of the Fulani community and other residents in parts of Riyom and neighbouring local government areas, underscoring the need for effective protection of civilians and thorough investigations into attacks.
Security agencies face calls to identify those responsible for such incidents, prevent further violence and ensure that suspects are dealt with through due process.
The latest attack highlights the continuing vulnerability of residents in affected communities and the importance of impartial investigations, timely security intervention and cooperation among community leaders to prevent further bloodshed.
No independent confirmation of the alleged attackers’ identities or motive was available in the reports reviewed. The allegations remain subject to investigation.
