ENUGU, Enugu State — The Igbo-Etiti Local Government Education Authority in Enugu State has reportedly issued queries to some public school teachers, directing them to explain within 48 hours why they failed to attend a rally organised in support of Governor Peter Mbah’s second-term ambition.
The rally, held at Okpara Square in Enugu on October 10, 2026, was organised under the auspices of the Teachers for Grassroots Movement and featured endorsements of Mbah and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report published on Thursday, October 22, the education authority alleged that some teachers under its jurisdiction failed to attend the event despite earlier circulars directing them to participate.
In the query letter, the authority reportedly described the alleged absence without official permission as an act of insubordination and asked the affected teachers to explain in writing why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.
The teachers were reportedly instructed to submit their responses within 48 hours of receiving the letters, through their respective school heads to the office of the Education Secretary. The responses were also to be submitted in triplicate, with copies routed to the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board.
The letter warned that failure to respond within the stipulated period would be treated as an admission of guilt and could attract administrative sanctions.
The query was reportedly signed by Okwoka Eucharia on behalf of the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Education Authority. Copies were also sent to relevant education officials and representatives of the Teachers for Grassroots Movement.
The development has raised questions about the relationship between public school responsibilities and participation in political endorsement events, particularly where attendance is allegedly treated as a directive from an education authority.
The October 10 rally brought together teachers and other supporters who endorsed Mbah for a second term and Tinubu for re-election. State government reports said thousands of teachers participated in the event, citing education investment, teacher welfare, promotions and other interventions as reasons for their support.
However, the report concerning the queries did not establish whether the affected teachers had valid reasons for their absence, whether they had obtained permission to stay away or whether any disciplinary sanctions had been imposed.
As of the time of reporting, no response from the affected teachers or a detailed public explanation from the Enugu State Government regarding the queries had been confirmed in the reports reviewed.
