Monarch unveils power initiative to provide uninterrupted electricity as kingdom marks first coronation anniversary.
The Okuokpellagbe of Okpella Kingdom, His Royal Majesty King Michael Eshioronoya Olorunfemi Sado, has announced that residents of Okpella Kingdom will no longer pay electricity bills, with the directive taking effect from July 1, 2026.
The announcement was made during activities marking the monarch’s first coronation anniversary, where he unveiled what he described as a landmark power initiative designed to improve the welfare of residents and drive sustainable development across the kingdom.
According to the monarch, the initiative is expected to provide uninterrupted electricity to homes, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities throughout Okpella Kingdom, while relieving residents of the financial burden of electricity payments.
King Sado said the project forms part of his broader development agenda focused on infrastructure, education, youth empowerment and economic growth.
He noted that the electricity initiative complements other programmes introduced under his reign, including scholarship schemes, educational support initiatives and the establishment of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre aimed at equipping young people with digital skills.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by residents, many of whom described it as a significant step that could stimulate economic activities, attract investment and improve the standard of living within the kingdom.
However, as of the time of this report, details of the implementation framework, funding model and operational arrangements for the initiative had not been made public.
IBN News understands that further clarification on how the programme will be executed is expected in the coming days.
Okpella, located in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, is one of Nigeria’s major limestone-producing communities and hosts some of the country’s largest cement manufacturing companies.
