Oborevwori orders Julius Berger to repair washed-out East-West Road section at Agbarho

Delta Government moves to ease traffic disruption as erosion damages major Niger Delta highway

ASABA, DELTA STATE — Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to commence urgent remedial work on the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The directive was disclosed on Thursday, October 1, 2026, by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, in a statement issued in Asaba.

Aniagwu said the intervention followed growing difficulties faced by motorists, residents, traders and other road users after erosion damaged a section of the federal highway.

According to the Commissioner, heavy rainfall and strong erosive activity caused part of the road to collapse, creating a major obstruction along one of the key transportation corridors connecting communities across the Niger Delta.

Although the East-West Road is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori considered the situation too urgent to await prolonged administrative or jurisdictional processes because of the road’s importance to residents and economic activities.

He said Julius Berger had consequently been directed to undertake remedial works on the affected section to restore safer and smoother movement along the corridor.

The Commissioner described the East-West Road as a critical route for commuters, farmers, traders, businesses and transport operators, warning that prolonged disruption could have wider economic consequences for communities along the corridor.

The intervention comes amid reports of increasing difficulty for motorists travelling between Effurun, Agbarho and Ughelli, with the damaged section forcing traffic to navigate restricted passages and alternative routes.

Aniagwu assured motorists that efforts were underway to ease the disruption and restore normal traffic conditions.

He appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching the damaged portion of the highway while repair activities are being carried out.

The Commissioner added that the Delta State Government would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government and private-sector partners where necessary to address infrastructure challenges affecting residents and economic activities across the state.
