ABA, ABIA STATE — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials valued at over ₦200 million during a raid on five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State.
The operation followed credible intelligence indicating that the shops were allegedly involved in the production and supply of counterfeit packaging materials for popular alcoholic beverages and other consumer products.
According to the agency, its Investigation and Enforcement operatives recovered counterfeit labels, corks, packs and outer packaging materials bearing the names of several well-known brands.
The affected brands include Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
NAFDAC said the estimated value of the seized packaging materials exceeded ₦200 million, highlighting the scale of the suspected counterfeit packaging operation.
During the raid, the agency’s operatives reportedly encountered threats and resistance from some traders, making it difficult to evacuate the seized materials from the market.
The owners of the five shops were absent when the operation was conducted. Consequently, the premises were placed on hold to prevent interference with the materials remaining inside.
NAFDAC subsequently invited the Market Union Chairman, who pledged to ensure the security of the sealed premises and assist the agency in identifying and producing the shop owners for further investigation.
The operation forms part of the agency’s efforts to tackle counterfeit products and protect consumers from potentially harmful goods entering the Nigerian market.
Counterfeit packaging can facilitate the sale of fake or adulterated beverages by making them appear to be genuine branded products, potentially exposing consumers to serious health risks.
NAFDAC’s investigation is expected to establish the extent of the alleged activities and identify those responsible.
