LAGOS, Nigeria — An angry mob on Friday, October 16, 2026, set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State following a reported fatal collision involving a commercial motorcyclist.
The incident triggered tension in the area as aggrieved residents and youths reportedly attacked the bus driver before police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps intervened to rescue him.
The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency received an emergency call at approximately 10:21 a.m.
According to Shakiru, firefighters arrived at the scene and found the BRT bus engulfed in flames. The emergency responders subsequently worked to extinguish the fire.
“The information got to us at about 10:21 hrs. When we arrived at the scene at Ogolonto Bus Stop, along Ikorodu Road, we found the BRT bus on fire and were able to put out the flames,” he said.
Driver Rescued After Mob Attack
Shakiru explained that preliminary information available to the fire service indicated that the bus was set on fire by people angered by the accident.
“It was reported that some aggrieved persons set the bus on fire because of an accident the BRT bus was involved in. The driver was beaten, but he is still alive. He was rescued by security operatives and has received medical attention,” he stated.
The intervention of the security operatives helped prevent the situation from escalating further and enabled the driver to receive medical attention.
However, the fire service spokesperson said he could not provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Circumstances of Crash Remain Unclear
Reports circulating on social media indicated that the motorcyclist was crushed to death in the collision, prompting the violent reaction from people at the scene.
TheCable and other Nigerian media organisations reported that the identity of the deceased motorcyclist and the precise circumstances of the accident had not been officially confirmed as of the time of reporting. The Lagos State Police Command had also not issued a detailed public statement on the incident in the reports reviewed.
It was not immediately clear whether any arrests had been made in connection with the burning of the bus or the assault on the driver.
The incident has renewed concerns about public safety and mob violence following road accidents. While fatal collisions can provoke anger and grief, attacks on drivers and the destruction of vehicles risk causing further harm and should not replace a proper investigation by the relevant authorities.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances of the crash and determine responsibility through the appropriate legal process.
