EFCC EXTRADITES TWO NIGERIANS TO U.S. OVER ALLEGED SEXTORTION OF TEENAGE BOYS

Two men face prosecution in America over alleged online sexual exploitation linked to the deaths of two minors

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has facilitated the extradition of two Nigerian men to the United States to face prosecution over allegations of sexually exploiting and extorting teenage boys online, with the cases linked to the deaths of two American minors.

The EFCC said the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 facilitated the extradition of Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle to the United States on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

According to the Commission, the two men were identified in separate investigations conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into alleged sextortion schemes targeting male minors, particularly teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17.

The investigations reportedly linked the suspects to online sexual exploitation and extortion activities involving minors in the United States.

The EFCC said the alleged schemes involved the use of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) to threaten and extort victims for money through different channels, including money remittance services, gift cards and cryptocurrency.

The Commission said the FBI investigations involved two separate cases in which American minors allegedly died by suicide after being subjected to online sexual exploitation and extortion.

In one of the cases, the EFCC said a 13-year-old boy received a direct message on Instagram from an individual who suggested an exchange of nude photographs.

According to the Commission, the subsequent investigation revealed that the individual allegedly threatened to distribute the minor’s photographs to his Instagram contacts and demanded money from him.

The EFCC further said communications reportedly continued even after the minor indicated that he intended to take his own life.

The FBI subsequently developed intelligence that allegedly identified individuals connected with the online scheme and sought the assistance of the EFCC in identifying, investigating and prosecuting persons linked to the alleged activities under applicable Nigerian laws.

Following the investigation, Adekunle was arrested and brought before the EFCC.

In the second case, the FBI sought the extradition of Olawale to the United States over a seven-count charge relating to alleged sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, interstate threatening communications and alleged distribution of child pornography.

The extradition process against Olawale was subsequently initiated by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division.

The case was filed as Suit No. FHC/L/CS/353/2024 before Justice A. Lewis-Allagoa following the extradition request from the FBI.

The Federal High Court initially refused the extradition application in a ruling delivered on June 10, 2024.

The decision was subsequently challenged by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The legal battle eventually moved to the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division.

On July 7, 2026, the Court of Appeal, in Appeal No. CA/LAG/CV/721/2024, set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court, thereby clearing the way for Olawale’s extradition to the United States.

The EFCC said the successful extradition of the two suspects demonstrates the growing cooperation between Nigerian law enforcement authorities and their American counterparts in tackling crimes that cross international borders.

The case also highlights the growing concern over internet-enabled sexual exploitation of children and teenagers, particularly the use of social media platforms to manipulate, threaten and extort vulnerable victims.

Sextortion involves threatening a person with the release or distribution of sexually explicit images or material unless the victim complies with demands, which may include payment of money or additional sexual material.

The cases involving the two Nigerian suspects are particularly serious because, according to the EFCC, the FBI investigations connected the alleged online exploitation to the deaths of two American minors.

The extradition means that the suspects will now face the American justice system over the allegations against them.

The allegations remain matters for prosecution and determination by the appropriate court in the United States.

The EFCC said the development further demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in investigating cyber-enabled crimes, particularly where suspects, victims, financial transactions and digital evidence are located in different countries.

The Commission’s collaboration with the FBI also reflects the increasingly international nature of cybercrime investigations.

With criminals able to communicate with victims across borders, receive payments through international financial channels and use digital platforms to conceal their identities, law enforcement agencies increasingly depend on cooperation and intelligence sharing across jurisdictions.

The EFCC said the extradition of Olawale and Adekunle underscores its continued partnership with the FBI in combating transnational financial crimes and internet-enabled offences involving the exploitation of minors.

The development also serves as another warning about the serious consequences of online exploitation and sextortion, particularly when minors are targeted.

For victims and families affected by such crimes, the consequences can extend far beyond financial loss, with threats and psychological pressure potentially causing severe emotional distress.

The EFCC’s action demonstrates that alleged perpetrators operating from Nigeria can face investigation and prosecution even when their alleged victims are located thousands of kilometres away.

With the two suspects now extradited to the United States, their cases will proceed under the jurisdiction of the American courts.
