Okpebholo Administration, Diaspora Organisations Strengthen Primary Healthcare in Uhunmwonde
The Edo State Government, in collaboration with Nurses Across the Borders (NAB) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE), has commissioned the first phase of the renovated Ugomoson Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.
The commissioning ceremony underscored the growing partnership between the Edo State Government and Edo professionals in the diaspora aimed at improving healthcare delivery through strategic collaboration.
Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr. (Mrs.) Lauretta Ogboro-Okor, said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s inclusive governance has restored the confidence of Edo indigenes abroad, encouraging them to contribute to the state’s development.
She explained that the rehabilitation of the health centre was made possible through the joint efforts of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Nurses Across the Borders and NIDOE, adding that both organisations have pledged continued support through the provision of medical equipment and other essential healthcare resources.
Ogboro-Okor assured that similar development projects would be extended to other communities across Edo State.
Commissioning the facility, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, commended the Diaspora Agency and its partners for complementing the government’s efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.
He assured residents that the Ministry of Health would ensure proper maintenance of the facility, including the construction of a perimeter fence to safeguard the infrastructure and medical equipment.
The commissioner also announced that the state government would absorb two volunteer health workers who have served at the facility for the past four years into the state’s workforce in recognition of their dedication.
Chairman of Uhunmwonde Local Government Council, Hon. Rotimi Austine Imafidon, praised the Edo State Government, the Diaspora Agency and its development partners for delivering the project, pledging the council’s continued support to sustain and improve the health centre.
Residents of Ugomoson who benefited from the free medical outreach held alongside the commissioning expressed appreciation to the state government and its partners, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
They said the upgraded primary healthcare centre would significantly improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Ugomoson and neighbouring communities.
Stakeholders also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for promoting diaspora engagement through the establishment and revitalisation of the Edo State Diaspora Agency.
