DELTA BECOMES FIRST IN NIGERIA TO INSTALL SIEMENS HELIUM-FREE MRI MACHINE

Asaba Specialist Hospital begins MRI services as state government expands access to advanced healthcare

Delta State has become the first state in Nigeria to install a state-of-the-art Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, marking a major milestone in the country’s healthcare sector.

The advanced MRI machine has been installed at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, where the Delta State Government has officially commenced MRI services aimed at improving access to specialised diagnostic healthcare.

To mark the launch of the new service, the hospital offered free MRI scans for two days, with more than 10 patients benefiting from the initiative.

Speaking on the development, medical officials said the installation of the Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI scanner will significantly improve the hospital’s diagnostic capacity, allowing doctors to detect and manage complex medical conditions with greater speed and accuracy.

The Chief Medical Director of Asaba Specialist Hospital, Dr. Ighosewe, said the new equipment will reduce the need for patients to travel outside Delta State in search of MRI services, making advanced medical imaging more accessible and affordable for residents.

He noted that the technology will enhance patient care by supporting quicker diagnosis, better treatment planning and improved clinical outcomes.

The Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI system is regarded as one of the latest innovations in medical imaging, designed to deliver high-quality diagnostic images while reducing dependence on liquid helium, making it more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The development represents another investment by the Delta State Government in strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to modern medical services across the state.

Residents and healthcare stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards improving specialist healthcare and positioning Delta State as a leader in medical innovation in Nigeria.

The introduction of the MRI service is expected to reduce referral delays, improve emergency and specialist care, and provide patients with world-class diagnostic services closer to home.
