Body of Benchers Chairman Charges New Lawyers to Defend Justice, Uphold Ethics

Akpomudje Urges Fresh Wigs to Embrace Integrity, Professionalism and Rule of Law

The Chairman of the Body of Benchers, HRM Albert Akpomudje, SAN, Eyavwien-Alaka I, has charged newly qualified lawyers in Nigeria to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and ethical conduct as they begin their legal careers.

Speaking at the Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja, Akpomudje congratulated the new legal practitioners on their admission into the Nigerian Bar, describing the occasion as both a significant achievement and a solemn responsibility requiring unwavering commitment to justice, the rule of law and service to society.

He reminded the new wigs that the legal profession remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy and good governance, urging them to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of Nigeria’s justice system through competence, discipline and continuous professional development.

Akpomudje called on the lawyers to defend justice without fear or favour, maintain the highest ethical standards and avoid any conduct capable of bringing the legal profession into disrepute.

He also encouraged them to embrace technology, innovation, mentorship and continuous learning to improve legal service delivery and support ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s justice sector.

The Body of Benchers Chairman further stressed that the legal profession offers opportunities not only for personal success but also for protecting constitutional democracy, promoting human rights and ensuring the peaceful resolution of disputes.

He also cautioned Nigerian universities against exceeding approved admission quotas for law programmes, warning that violations could create challenges for the Council of Legal Education and attract regulatory sanctions.

The Call to Bar ceremony formally admitted a fresh batch of qualified lawyers into the Nigerian Bar following the successful completion of their legal education and professional training.
