Agency pledges rehabilitation and reintegration as returnees arrive following xenophobic attacks.
The Edo State Government, through the Edo State Migration Agency, has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of Edo indigenes returning from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks in the country.
The Director-General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Hon. Lucky Agazuma, gave the assurance during an interview with journalists at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where he said the agency was fully prepared to receive the returnees with dignity and provide them with the necessary support.
Agazuma commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for what he described as the administration’s swift intervention and commitment to the safety and welfare of Edo citizens, both within Nigeria and in the diaspora.
According to him, the Governor’s response to the situation demonstrates a people-centred approach to governance and reassures Edo indigenes that the state government remains committed to their wellbeing irrespective of where they reside.
The Director-General said the agency would ensure the protection, rehabilitation and successful reintegration of the returnees in line with the state government’s vision of building an inclusive and compassionate society.
“We are waiting to receive you. You are welcome home, and we remain committed to supporting your reintegration and helping you rebuild your lives,” Agazuma told the returnees.
He further assured that the Edo State Migration Agency would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the successful reintegration of the returnees and provide opportunities that would enable them to rebuild their livelihoods.
The state government said the intervention forms part of its broader commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of Edo indigenes at home and abroad.
