Calls for South-East Senate presidency in bid to strengthen national unity.
A prominent Yoruba leader and public affairs commentator, Dr. Oyedele Oyewumi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt a more inclusive political arrangement ahead of the 2027 general elections by selecting a Hausa/Fulani running mate from the North-West.
Oyewumi also urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the emergence of a Senate President from the South-East, describing the proposal as a strategic step towards strengthening national unity, inclusion and political stability.Speaking on the political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections, the Yoruba leader said Nigeria’s diversity should be reflected in the country’s leadership structure to promote equity and national cohesion.According to him, choosing a running mate from the Hausa/Fulani bloc in the North-West while zoning the Senate presidency to the South-East would reinforce the principles of fairness and ensure broader national representation.
Oyewumi maintained that such an arrangement would foster greater confidence among Nigerians and further consolidate the country’s democratic process. His comments come as political consultations and realignments gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders across the country proposing various power-sharing arrangements.Neither the Presidency nor the leadership of the APC had officially responded to Oyewumi’s proposal as of the time of filing this report.
