EDO-KOGI BORDER — A social media activist identified as President Z04 has raised the alarm over a reported attack on military personnel along the Edo-Kogi State boundary in October 2026, claiming that one soldier was killed, two others injured and a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) stolen by the attackers.
In a public address, the activist alleged that the incident occurred while soldiers were on duty in the border area around Okpella and Okene. He claimed that the armed assailants opened fire on the personnel, killing one soldier instantly, reportedly a native of Cross River State, while two others sustained serious injuries and subsequently are receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
According to the activist, the attackers fled with the GPMG, a crew-served weapon used by military personnel to provide sustained fire support.

He expressed concern that the missing weapon could pose a serious threat to communities around the two states if it were used in subsequent attacks.
President Z04 further alleged that the suspected attackers had not been apprehended and the weapon had not been recovered as of the time of his address.
However, IBN News could not independently confirm the date and precise location of the attack, the identities of the soldiers involved, the reported casualties or the status of the missing weapon. The claims have not been independently confirmed by the Nigerian Army or the police in the reports reviewed.
Activist Calls for Joint Security Action
The activist commended the Edo State Commissioner of Police and security personnel for what he described as their response to the incident, including efforts to search the area.
He urged the security authorities in Edo and Kogi states to strengthen intelligence sharing, coordinate operations and intensify efforts to locate the suspected attackers and recover the weapon.
He also called on political leaders, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to cooperate with security agencies in addressing insecurity along the border.
According to him, protecting communities should not be left to government and security agencies alone. He appealed for lawful community support for security operations, while emphasising the need for collective action against armed criminal groups.
Concerns Over Border Security

The reported incident has drawn attention to security concerns along the Edo-Kogi corridor, where authorities have previously conducted joint operations against kidnapping and other criminal activities.
In August 2026, the Edo and Kogi police commands strengthened cooperation along their shared boundary, with commissioners of police from both states inspecting joint security operations and vulnerable locations. The initiative formed part of efforts to tackle kidnapping and improve safety along the border corridor.
The theft of a military machine gun, if confirmed, would present an additional security concern because of the potential for a stolen weapon to be used in further violent crimes.
President Z04 appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the appropriate authorities rather than confront armed suspects themselves.
IBN News will update this report when the Nigerian Army, the Edo or Kogi State Police Commands, or other relevant authorities provide an official account of the reported attack and the search for the missing weapon.
