Fayose Raises Questions Over Carrefour Supermarket Developments in Abuja, Alleges Public Land Encroachment

ABUJA, Nigeria — Social commentator Prince Isaac Fayose has questioned the locations of several Carrefour supermarket developments in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), alleging that some are being constructed on public land and green areas.

Fayose made the allegations in a public statement in which he described the projects as “WIKECARREFOURS,” drawing a comparison with Hypercity Supermarkets associated with Port Harcourt and linking the developments to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The statement listed several locations where Fayose claimed the supermarkets were being developed, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu Street near the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) office, the Central Business District, the entrance to Guzape from Muhammadu Buhari Way in Garki, Jabi near AA Rano, and Ushafa.

He alleged that some of the sites were previously designated green areas or land belonging to government agencies. He also described the Jabi location as a development on memorial land.

A photograph supplied in connection with the claims shows a building displaying the Carrefour supermarket logo. However, the photograph does not independently establish the property’s ownership, the identity of its developer or the legal status of the land on which it stands.

Fayose threatened to pursue legal action over the properties, saying he intended to approach the High Court in Abuja after May 29, 2027, to seek the recovery of the lands he alleges were unlawfully taken.

The allegations raise questions about land allocation, planning approvals, the protection of public spaces and the responsibilities of authorities overseeing development in the FCT.

However, the specific claims concerning the listed sites have not been independently verified. Establishing whether any land was unlawfully occupied would require examination of official land records, allocation documents, development approvals and any relevant court proceedings.

Separate media reports have documented disputes over land allocations in Abuja, including disagreements involving the FCT Administration. Those reports do not, by themselves, prove Fayose’s allegations concerning the Carrefour developments.

As of publication, no specific response from Wike, Carrefour or the relevant FCT authorities addressing Fayose’s claims about the listed locations was available in the material reviewed.

IBN News will continue to follow developments and seek clarification from the relevant authorities on the ownership and planning status of the properties.
