During the engagement, the monarch played a game of chess with Onakoya, highlighting the strategic thinking, patience and foresight required to navigate the game.
The encounter also provided an opportunity to reflect on how chess mirrors real-life challenges, with each move requiring careful consideration, planning and the ability to anticipate possible outcomes.
Ogiame Atuwatse III expressed support for the use of chess as a tool for intellectual development, empowerment and social change, particularly among children who have limited access to educational and developmental opportunities.
The monarch also commended Onakoya for his work through Chess in Slums Africa (CISA), an initiative that uses chess to engage children in underserved communities and help develop their confidence, problem-solving abilities and aspirations.
He noted the importance of purposeful initiatives that identify and nurture young people’s potential, equipping them with the skills and mindset to pursue a better future.
Onakoya has gained international recognition for using chess as a platform to promote education, inclusion and youth development, bringing attention to the opportunities that can emerge when children are given access to supportive learning environments.
The visit underscored the potential of partnerships between traditional institutions and social-impact organisations to promote intellectual growth, expand opportunities for young people and inspire positive change in communities.
