Tinubu Mourns Afenifere Leader Reuben Fasoranti, Who Dies at 100

ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the elder statesman and prominent Afenifere leader who died at the age of 100.

In a condolence statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Tinubu expressed sadness over the passing of Fasoranti, describing him as a respected patriarch, an elder statesman and one of the leading figures in the progressive political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

On behalf of the Federal Government and Nigerians, the President extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government and people, residents of South-West Nigeria and members of the Afenifere socio-political organisation.

Tinubu described Fasoranti’s life as an example of integrity, discipline, selflessness and commitment to the Yoruba people, as well as Nigeria’s unity and progress.

The President recalled the deceased’s career as an educationist and school principal before his service as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State and his eventual emergence as a leading figure in Afenifere.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti remained committed to the principles of true federalism, social justice and building a country that works for all Nigerians.

He also credited the late elder statesman with making significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, noting that he stood for democracy and noble causes despite the risks involved.

Tinubu said Nigeria would miss Fasoranti’s wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, particularly at a time when the country needed the guidance of experienced statesmen.

The President recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, describing the centenary as a celebration not merely of longevity but of a life marked by honour and service.

Tinubu also recounted a meeting with Fasoranti in Akure in 2022, when he visited the elder statesman to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency.

According to the President, Fasoranti offered prayers and encouragement during the visit and expressed confidence that Tinubu would become President during his lifetime.

Tinubu said he had hoped the elder statesman would live to witness his second term and the economic growth and prosperity he hopes to achieve for Nigeria.

“Baba made immense contributions to this country,” the President said, while expressing gratitude for the late leader’s long life and service.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of Fasoranti’s soul and asked God to comfort his family and others mourning his death.

Fasoranti was a prominent figure in the Yoruba progressive movement and remained an influential voice on political and national issues throughout his public life.
