ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has publicly praised his son, Seyi Tinubu, for organising young Nigerians through the City Boy Movement, urging him to deepen his commitment to service and set an example for future generations.
The President made the remarks on Monday, October 19, 2026, during a gathering of the City Boy Movement and other youth support groups at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event, themed around political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, brought together leaders and supporters of the movement backing Tinubu’s administration and re-election bid.
Taking a personal moment during his address, Tinubu disclosed that he had received calls from people asking what political office his son intended to contest, given his growing involvement in political mobilisation.
“Now permit me a personal moment, with my son, Seyi. I have watched what you’ve started with City Boy. I got some calls within the last few weeks asking me what is Seyi running for. He’s running after his father,” the President said.
Tinubu commended Seyi and his colleagues for investing their time in engaging young people, listening to their concerns and building an organised movement without demanding political titles or public office.
“You and your young colleagues, you are investing your time effectively. We are with you. Thank you. You did it humbly. You did not ask for a title or an office. You went to the young people, your age mates, your group. You listened to them and organised them,” he said.
The President described himself as proud of the group but cautioned his son that the work was only beginning, urging him to increase rather than reduce his efforts.
“But I will tell you what every father tells a son: you have only started. Do more, not less. Serve harder. Set an example that your own children, my grandchildren, will be proud to follow,” Tinubu added.
He also emphasised that serving the country should be regarded as an honour, encouraging young Nigerians to participate actively in national affairs and contribute to shaping the country’s future.
The State House said the President commended the City Boy Movement for developing grassroots structures, engaging young people and establishing community outreach initiatives. Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of the Relax, Tinubu Is Fixing Nigeria movement and other support groups working to communicate his administration’s policies.
Seyi Tinubu is the patron of the City Boy Movement, which mobilises support for his father’s administration and political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections. The group has promoted grassroots engagement and youth participation in political activities.
During the event, Tinubu also thanked young supporters for standing by his administration through its economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, currency reforms and changes to the tax system. He maintained that the measures were necessary to reposition the economy, while acknowledging the difficult period Nigerians had experienced.
The President’s remarks come as political mobilisation intensifies ahead of the next general elections. The City Boy Movement has stated its intention to expand its reach across states, local government areas and wards in support of Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
Although Tinubu’s remark that Seyi was “running after his father” prompted renewed attention to his son’s political activities, the President did not announce any elective office that Seyi intends to contest.
The event highlights the growing role of youth support organisations in Nigeria’s political landscape and the efforts by political movements to build grassroots networks ahead of the 2027 polls.
