Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan Dies at 71

ASABA, Delta State — Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71, with his family announcing his passing on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The former governor reportedly died on Monday morning, according to a statement issued by his family and signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan on behalf of the family.

In the statement, the family announced the death of their patriarch, describing the development as a painful loss to his relatives, friends, associates and the people of Delta State.

“It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch, His Excellency, Dr. Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State, who departed this world on the morning of 19th October 2026,” the statement read.

The family described Uduaghan as a source of strength, a respected elder and a father figure whose life and service touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.

“His passing has left us devastated. Words can hardly express the depth of our sorrow at the loss of a man who meant so much to our family and whose life and service touched countless others across Delta State and Nigeria,” the statement added.

The family also expressed gratitude for his life and public service, noting that his contributions would remain part of his legacy. They prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for everyone mourning him.

Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 before becoming Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.

He subsequently emerged as governor in 2007 and governed Delta State for two consecutive terms until 2015.

During his time in office, his administration pursued human and infrastructural development initiatives across the state, including programmes in healthcare and other public services.

A medical doctor by profession, Uduaghan was a prominent figure in Delta State politics and remained associated with the state’s political and public affairs after leaving office.

His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Delta State’s political history, with tributes expected from political leaders, former colleagues, associates and residents reflecting on his years in public service.

The family has not included funeral arrangements in the announcement, and further details are expected to be communicated separately.

May his soul rest in peace.
