Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses and launched a N1 billion economic empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries during an official visit to Benin City, Edo State.
The initiatives, introduced by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, are aimed at easing transportation challenges, supporting small businesses and expanding economic opportunities for women, young people and vulnerable groups.

Speaking at the event, the First Lady commended the Edo State Government for the initiatives, describing them as practical steps towards improving livelihoods and supporting economic growth. She expressed hope that the financial assistance would help beneficiaries strengthen their businesses and achieve greater financial independence.
Under the empowerment programme, each of the 5,000 beneficiaries is expected to receive N200,000, bringing the total allocation to N1 billion. The programme is intended to support income-generating activities and strengthen the economic capacity of beneficiaries.

The 50 CNG buses are expected to provide an alternative public transportation option for residents. Governor Okpebholo said the buses would help make transportation more accessible, efficient and environmentally friendly, while easing the financial pressure on commuters, traders, workers and students.
Reports published ahead of the commissioning indicated that the buses form part of a wider plan to expand the Edo City Transport Service fleet. The state government had also approved a larger procurement plan, with the 50 buses representing the first batch of a proposed 100-bus fleet.

The governor described the two initiatives as responses to important needs of residents, particularly affordable transportation and economic empowerment. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the support extended to his administration.
Earlier in the day, Senator Oluremi Tinubu arrived in Benin City and was received by Governor Okpebholo, his Kogi State counterpart, Governor Ahmed Ododo, the Edo State First Lady, Mrs Edesili Anani Okpebholo, traditional rulers, APC leaders and other dignitaries.

The First Lady was also scheduled to pay a courtesy visit to the Palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II. During the visit, the monarch commended her public service and called for collaboration to advance programmes supporting women, children, youths and vulnerable communities.
Beyond the commissioning ceremony, the key test for the initiatives will be their implementation. Residents will be looking for evidence that the buses translate into affordable fares and reliable services, while the empowerment programme reaches eligible beneficiaries transparently and delivers lasting economic benefits.
