Ondo Community Demands Urgent Cleanup After NAF Crash Leaves Residents Battling Offensive Odour

IGBOKODA, ONDO STATE — Residents of Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State have called on the Federal Government, the Ondo State Government and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to urgently clean up the environment following a deadly military aircraft crash that has raised concerns about pollution and public health risks.

More than a week after the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed into a swamp near its Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda on October 5, residents say a foul smell has spread into nearby homes, fuelling fears of possible environmental contamination from decomposing human remains and aviation fuel.

The crash claimed the lives of all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers. Recovery efforts have reportedly been complicated by the swampy terrain and the aircraft’s submersion in water.

The Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has appealed to the relevant authorities to ensure the removal of remaining human remains and aircraft debris, contain any fuel spillage and decontaminate the affected environment.

The monarch also called for the provision of safe drinking water to residents while recovery and cleanup operations continue.

Residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact on children and other vulnerable members of the community, particularly those who rely on nearby waterways for domestic activities.

Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, acknowledged concerns about possible pollution, stating that the state government was working with the Federal Government to assess the environmental and public health implications and determine appropriate decontamination measures.

However, the commissioner disputed claims that residents had been left without access to drinking water, noting that boreholes were available in the area.

The incident has heightened calls for urgent action to complete recovery operations, assess possible contamination and ensure the safety of the surrounding environment.

Residents are urging the relevant authorities to provide clear updates on cleanup efforts, water safety and measures being taken to prevent further environmental harm.
