Teslim Igbalaye released as investigation continues; five other suspects remain linked to the probe
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the release of the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, after he was detained alongside five other suspects over alleged vote-buying-related offences.
Igbalaye was released on Thursday afternoon, according to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, who said the investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
The SSG had reportedly been detained after police operatives recovered Permanent Voter’s Cards, cash and a voters’ register from his residence during an operation connected to alleged electoral offences.
Confirming his release, Ojelabi said: “I can only tell you that the SSG, Mr Teslim Igbalaye, has been released this afternoon, and the investigation is still ongoing.”
Five other individuals were reportedly arrested at the residence.
They were identified as Abiodun Arowomole, popularly known as “Ashipa”; Taiwo Akande; Lukman Adeyemo; Muftau Olaoye; and Musiliu Aderemi.
Police reportedly described Arowomole as a wanted murder suspect who was already on the command’s watch list.
The development comes amid heightened political activity surrounding the forthcoming Osun governorship election, with allegations of electoral malpractice and political tensions dominating public discourse in the state.
Following news of Igbalaye’s release, members and supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s political camp reportedly welcomed the development.
Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, commended the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, for what he described as responding to calls for the SSG’s release.
Olajengbesi said the police best serves the country when it protects the rule of law and stands against oppression.
“Congratulations, People of Osun State,” he said.
He further welcomed Igbalaye back, describing his release as a victory for those who had demanded his freedom.
However, the police have maintained that the investigation is continuing.
The release of the SSG does not amount to a determination of the allegations against him, and no finding of guilt has been established against him in court.
The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged recovery of electoral materials and cash, as well as determine whether any offences were committed and who, if anyone, should face prosecution.
The development is likely to remain a major political issue in Osun State as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the governorship contest.
IBN News will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates as the police investigation progresses.
