SAPELE SET TO GET FIRST UNIVERSITY AS GODDAY EREWA UNIVERSITY NEARS TAKE-OFF

New private university to offer programmes in computing, health sciences, management and social sciences

Sapele in Delta State is set to record a major development in its education sector as Godday Erewa University moves closer to commencing academic activities, potentially making it the first university established in the town.

The institution, founded by Nigerian entrepreneur, philanthropist and education administrator, Chief Dr. Godday Erewa, is preparing for its take-off with a range of academic programmes designed to provide residents of Sapele and surrounding communities with greater access to tertiary education.

According to information released by WS News, the university’s initial academic structure will cover major areas including computing, arts, management and social sciences, as well as allied health sciences.

Among the programmes listed for the institution are Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations and Criminology and Security Studies.

The university is also expected to offer health-related programmes including Nursing Science, Public Health, Medical Laboratory Science, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

Beyond degree programmes, the institution is also reported to have accreditation to award the Nigerian Certificate in Education, NCE, further widening the opportunities available to prospective students.

The emergence of the university is expected to have implications beyond education, particularly for the social and economic development of Sapele.

For years, access to quality higher education has remained an important issue for communities across Nigeria, with students often having to travel outside their immediate areas to pursue university education.

The establishment of a university within Sapele could therefore reduce the distance many young people have to travel for tertiary education while creating opportunities for students from Sapele, other parts of Delta State and neighbouring communities.

The institution could also contribute to the local economy through employment, accommodation, transportation, food businesses, retail activities and other services that normally grow around university communities.

With programmes covering technology, business, social sciences and health, the university is also positioned to respond to some of the skills required in Nigeria’s changing economy.

The inclusion of Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering and Information Technology is particularly significant at a time when technology skills are becoming increasingly important in employment, business and public administration.

Similarly, the proposed health science programmes could create new opportunities for young people interested in professional careers within Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The institution’s reported NCE programme also gives it a wider educational role, potentially supporting the training of future teachers and education professionals.

For Sapele, the development could represent more than the arrival of another educational institution. It could become part of a broader transformation of the town’s human capital and economic landscape if the university is properly developed and maintained.

The establishment of the university also comes at a time when private universities continue to play an increasingly important role in expanding Nigeria’s tertiary education capacity.

As government-owned universities face growing pressure from rising student populations, private institutions have increasingly provided additional spaces for students seeking higher education.

However, as the university approaches take-off, prospective students and members of the public will naturally be interested in issues such as final regulatory approvals, programme accreditation, admission requirements, tuition fees, academic calendar, facilities, staffing and the date for commencement of lectures.

These details will be important in helping prospective students and parents make informed decisions about the institution.

The university’s successful take-off will also depend on the availability of adequate lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, accommodation, healthcare facilities, information technology infrastructure and other facilities required for quality learning.

For a university with programmes in Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the availability of properly equipped laboratories and other practical training facilities will be particularly important.

The institution’s founders and management will therefore face the responsibility of ensuring that the academic programmes are supported by the required infrastructure and qualified academic personnel.

If successfully implemented, Godday Erewa University could become an important addition to Sapele’s educational landscape and a new destination for students seeking higher education within Delta State.

The development is also expected to attract attention from residents, traditional institutions, education stakeholders, prospective students and the wider Delta State community as the university moves towards its formal commencement.

For Sapele, the expected arrival of its first university represents a significant milestone with the potential to influence education, employment, business activity and community development for years to come.

IBN News will continue to monitor developments surrounding Godday Erewa University, including its official take-off, admissions and academic programmes.
