Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has rewarded Master Great Chinedu Okediashi with ₦20 million after the student emerged winner of the World Spelling Bee Championship held in China.

The governor announced the cash reward on Friday while receiving the championship trophy from the student and officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education at the Government House in Asaba.

Oborevwori described the student’s achievement as a reflection of the Delta State Government’s sustained investment in education, stressing that the sector remains one of the administration’s highest priorities.

According to the governor, education is the greatest legacy parents and governments can give to children because it remains a lifelong asset that cannot be taken away.

“We don’t play with education in Delta State because it is the greatest legacy anyone can give to a child. Wealth can disappear, but education remains with you throughout your lifetime. That is why we continue to invest heavily in education,” he said.

The governor noted that Delta State has consistently excelled in international academic competitions, recalling that students from the state were part of Nigeria’s team that won the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, last year.

He said the latest global victory further demonstrates that investments in educational infrastructure, quality teaching and learning are producing outstanding results.

Oborevwori also commended the parents of Master Okediashi for nurturing and supporting their son, describing their role as instrumental to his success.

The governor equally praised Madonna International School for its commitment to academic excellence and announced that the state government would also provide support to the school in recognition of its contribution to producing the world champion.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, described the achievement as a historic milestone for Delta State, Nigeria and the African continent.

He said the championship trophy had returned to Africa through the efforts of Master Okediashi, attributing the success to the student’s dedication and the consistent support provided by the Delta State Government throughout the competition.

Ashibuogwu thanked Governor Oborevwori for his financial, moral and institutional support, noting that his encouragement inspired the team to achieve global success.

Presenting the trophy to the governor, Master Great Chinedu Okediashi expressed appreciation for the support he received and pledged to continue working hard to bring more international honours to Delta State and Nigeria.

The achievement has been widely celebrated as another landmark success for Nigeria on the global academic stage and a testament to the country’s growing excellence in international educational competitions.
