Suspects Open Fire on Operatives, Flee Into Forest as Police Intensify Manhunt
The Delta State Police Command has foiled a suspected cult initiation ceremony linked to the Black Axe Confraternity (Aye) and recovered firearms, ammunition, seven vehicles and other exhibits during a coordinated intelligence-led operation in Orogun Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area.
According to the Command, operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) acted on credible intelligence in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, indicating that suspected cult members were conducting an initiation ceremony inside a forest in Orogun.
Upon arrival at the location, the operatives reportedly came under gunfire from the suspected cultists. However, the Police responded swiftly, forcing the suspects to abandon the operation and flee into the adjoining forest along the Abbi–Abraka axis.
A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of one pump-action gun, one cut-to-size double-barrel gun, seven live cartridges, two expended cartridges, seven vehicles, six mobile phones, suspected cult regalia and other personal belongings believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing suspects.
The recovered exhibits have been taken into Police custody, while efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest those involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for the successful operation and reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and the fight against cultism, armed violence and other criminal activities across the state.
He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crime and enhancing public safety.
The Delta State Police Command assured that investigations are ongoing and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
