2027 ELECTION: “EVEN IF THE ELECTION IS FREE AND FAIR, THE PEOPLE’S VOTES MAY STILL NOT COUNT” — ARCHBISHOP ONAIYEKAN

Former Catholic Archbishop warns Nigeria’s democracy is at risk, raises concerns over whether voters’ choices will be respected

Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has expressed concern over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that even if voting is conducted peacefully and fairly, the wishes of the electorate may still not be reflected in the final outcome.

Speaking on the state of Nigeria’s democracy, Onaiyekan said there are growing fears that the votes of ordinary Nigerians may not count if institutions responsible for managing elections fail to uphold transparency and justice.

“Even if we have a free and fair election, the votes of the people may not count because this government is trying to win by all means,” he said.

The respected cleric stressed that democracy can only survive when every vote cast by citizens is protected and accurately reflected in the final election results.

He warned that any attempt to undermine the electoral process or weaken public confidence in elections could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s democratic future.

Onaiyekan called on all institutions responsible for conducting elections to remain independent, impartial and committed to the rule of law, urging political leaders to place the country’s stability above partisan interests.

He also appealed to political parties, security agencies, electoral officials and the judiciary to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without bias, insisting that Nigerians deserve an electoral process that is transparent, credible and trusted by all.

The cleric urged citizens not to lose faith in democracy despite existing concerns, encouraging eligible voters to participate peacefully in the electoral process while remaining vigilant in defending their democratic rights.

His remarks come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, with parties, political stakeholders and civil society organisations calling for reforms that will strengthen electoral credibility and ensure that the will of the people prevails.

The comments have already generated debate across the political landscape, with supporters and critics offering differing views on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the preparations for the next general election.

As the country moves closer to 2027, attention is expected to remain focused on the independence of electoral institutions, the conduct of political actors and the ability of Nigeria’s democratic system to deliver elections that reflect the genuine choice of the electorate.
