LASEMA Warns Developers Against Unsafe Demolition as Worker Dies Under Collapsed Building
One person has died while two others were rescued alive after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition partially collapsed in the Aboru area of Alimosho, Lagos State.
The incident occurred at about 12:56 a.m. at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, after the structure reportedly collapsed during demolition activities, trapping workers beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, immediately deployed its Alpha Eagle Response Team to the scene.
LASEMA said it assumed incident command and activated the state’s Emergency Response Plan to coordinate the multi-agency rescue operation.
Two adult males were successfully extricated alive from the debris and given emergency first aid by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to a nearby health facility for further treatment.
However, one adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure.
The rescue operation was carried out by LASEMA alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS.
The affected area was cordoned off to protect residents and allow emergency responders to carry out their operations safely.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, urged developers and members of the public to comply with building regulations and engage certified professionals for demolition and construction activities.
He also urged residents to promptly report unsafe building activities and emergencies through the state’s emergency numbers, 767 or 112.
The incident has again raised concerns over the dangers associated with unsafe demolition activities and the need for strict compliance with safety standards to prevent avoidable deaths and injuries.
IBN News reports that authorities have continued to warn property owners and developers against carrying out demolition and construction activities without proper safety measures and the involvement of qualified professionals.
