POLICE MOBILE FORCE TARGETS STRONGER TACTICAL CAPACITY AS IGP CHARGES INSTRUCTORS TO BUILD DISCIPLINE, PRECISION AND PROFESSIONALISM
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has formally opened a training programme for trainers and instructors of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), with a charge to participants to improve the operational readiness and tactical capacity of personnel across the Nigeria Police Force.
The training commenced on August 28, 2026, at the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ende-Hills, Nasarawa State, bringing together selected PMF trainers and instructors from different formations across the country.
The programme is designed to strengthen the ability of PMF instructors to train personnel effectively, improve tactical skills and prepare the Force’s 84 PMF Squadrons to respond more effectively to Nigeria’s changing security challenges.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, IGP Disu described the programme as an important step towards strengthening the operational future of the Police Mobile Force.
He said the changing security environment requires police personnel to continuously learn, adapt and improve their tactical competence, discipline and professionalism.
The IGP charged the trainers to see themselves as force multipliers, stressing that the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme must not end with the participants but should be effectively transferred to officers and men in their respective formations.
According to him, the effectiveness of the PMF will depend not only on the number of personnel available but also on the quality of their training and their ability to apply what they have learnt during real operations.
He urged the instructors to focus on producing competent personnel rather than merely helping participants obtain training certificates.
The IGP also emphasised that the modern Police Mobile Force must combine tactical strength with intelligence, precision, discipline, professionalism and respect for the law.
He maintained that operational readiness must become a continuous culture within the Force rather than something developed only when there is an emergency.
The programme is expected to improve the standard of tactical instruction across the PMF and create a stronger pool of instructors capable of passing modern policing techniques to personnel in different formations.
The event was attended by senior police officers and commanders, including DIG Umar Shehu Nadada, DIG Operations; AIG Alonyenu Idu, who is in charge of the Police Mobile Force; DCP Sunday Audu Peter, Commandant of the PMF Training College, Ende-Hills; and commandants of other PMF training colleges.
The Nasarawa State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Commandant Brah Samson Umoru, also attended the event.
Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, who was briefly present at the ceremony, congratulated the Inspector-General of Police on his leadership and efforts to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force.
Also speaking at the event, AIG Alonyenu Idu commended IGP Disu for what he described as his commitment to repositioning the Police Mobile Force.
He said the training would further prepare PMF personnel to maintain the operational reputation of the Force’s tactical arm.
The ceremony also featured tactical displays and practical demonstrations by personnel undergoing the training.
The demonstrations showcased various skills, discipline and operational capabilities of the participants and provided an opportunity for the trainers and senior officers to assess the level of preparedness of personnel.
The Police Mobile Force remains one of the key tactical components of the Nigeria Police Force and is deployed for special operations, public order duties and other security operations requiring specialised tactical capabilities.
With insecurity continuing to pose serious challenges in different parts of Nigeria, the demand for better-trained, disciplined and professionally coordinated police personnel has remained a major issue in national security discussions.
The latest training programme therefore comes at a time when the police are increasingly expected to move beyond conventional policing and strengthen intelligence-led, technology-driven and specialised operations.
For the IGP, the responsibility does not stop at acquiring new equipment or deploying more personnel. The Force must also ensure that its officers are properly trained to use available resources effectively and operate within the law.
The emphasis on discipline, intelligence and respect for human rights also reflects the need for tactical police operations to be carried out professionally while protecting the rights and safety of members of the public.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to continuous professional training, modernisation, improved welfare and the provision of the necessary tools and platforms to strengthen operational effectiveness.
The Force said the ultimate objective is to ensure that the Police Mobile Force remains a disciplined, agile and dependable tactical capability capable of responding to security threats and protecting lives and property across Nigeria.
The training of instructors is expected to have a wider impact as participants return to their respective formations and pass the knowledge and skills acquired to other PMF personnel.
For a Force operating in an increasingly complex security environment, the effectiveness of such training will ultimately be measured not by the ceremony or certificates issued, but by the quality, discipline and professionalism displayed by officers during actual operations.
