BREAKING: Tinubu Approves ₦111 Billion for 700km Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway

FG Flags Off Fourth Legacy Road Project to Boost Connectivity Across Northern Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of ₦111 billion for the commencement of the 700-kilometre Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway, one of the flagship infrastructure projects under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The approval was announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during the groundbreaking ceremony for Section One, Phase One of the project—a 125-kilometre stretch linking Akwanga and Jos through Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau states.

Represented by the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, President Tinubu described the superhighway as a strategic infrastructure project designed to improve connectivity, enhance security, reduce travel time and stimulate economic growth across the North-Central and North-East regions.

Tinubu said the 700km corridor would connect communities, markets, state capitals and key economic routes, adding that it would create opportunities for businesses and strengthen national integration.

The President also disclosed that work had already commenced on the Gombe–Maiduguri section, assuring Nigerians that the remaining phases would be awarded in due course.

Providing updates on other legacy projects, Tinubu said Section One of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has been substantially completed, while work continues on the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and other strategic road networks nationwide.

Announcing the funding approval, Minister Umahi said the President had authorised the immediate release of ₦111 billion to enable the contractor mobilise to the site without delay.

According to him, the Federal Government will directly finance 30 per cent of the project, while the remaining 70 per cent will be sourced through foreign financing arrangements.

Umahi described the superhighway as a transformational project that would unite Nigeria economically and physically, reduce transportation costs, improve security and accelerate regional development.

The Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway is the fourth of the Tinubu administration’s Legacy Road Projects, following the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Calabar-Abuja Superhighway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.
