Edo Police Probe Viral Video As IRT Officer Fires Rifle During Clash With EDSTMA Officials

CP Daaor Orders Discreet Investigation, Directs Disciplinary Review Over Conduct Captured On Camera

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — The Edo State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing a confrontation between officers of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and officials of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA).

The video, which has circulated widely across social media platforms, captures an altercation involving personnel of the two agencies before an IRT officer is seen firing his rifle into the air.

The incident has raised concerns over the conduct of security personnel and the circumstances under which a firearm was discharged during the confrontation.

Following the emergence of the footage, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, psc(+), mnips, reportedly met with representatives of both sides and ordered a discreet investigation to establish what led to the confrontation and determine the circumstances surrounding the use of the firearm.

The Commissioner also directed that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to an appropriate disciplinary review.

The Police Command said it would not condone indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or any abuse of police powers by its personnel.

It added that any officer found culpable after the conclusion of the investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The development has also placed renewed attention on the relationship between law enforcement agencies and other government institutions responsible for public safety and traffic management.

According to the Police Command, effective security administration requires professionalism, mutual respect and cooperation among government and security agencies.

The Command said the incident was being treated with the seriousness it deserved, while stressing that the established working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA remained intact.

The circumstances that preceded the confrontation, including what triggered the altercation and the reason for the firearm discharge, are expected to form part of the investigation.

For now, the Police have not publicly disclosed whether any arrests have been made or whether other disciplinary measures have been initiated beyond the review ordered by the Commissioner of Police.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, while encouraging the reporting of alleged misconduct through appropriate official channels.

The investigation is expected to establish individual responsibility and determine whether further administrative or legal action is warranted.

The Police statement was issued on September 10, 2026, by the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, anipr.

IBN News will continue to monitor developments as the investigation unfolds.
