AAC Presidential Candidate Says His Campaign Will Continue Across Nigeria as He Meets Supporters and Nigerians in the Diaspora
ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, is set to depart Nigeria for a tour of the United States and Canada, where he will reunite with his immediate family and meet supporters, activists and Nigerians in the diaspora ahead of an intensified campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore’s planned North American tour comes after an extended stay in Nigeria, during which the activist and politician faced arrests, detention and a series of legal battles connected to his political activities and outspoken criticism of the Federal Government.
According to information released by his political movement, Sowore will travel through North America while continuing to participate in campaign activities virtually.
The AAC presidential candidate is also expected to physically attend engagements involving Nigerians in the diaspora and supporters of his 2027 presidential ambition.
Sowore’s campaign said his temporary departure from Nigeria would not slow down its political activities across the country.

Sowore is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to resume what his campaign described as a more rigorous phase of the presidential campaign.

The North American trip also comes shortly after a major development in the cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services, DSS.
The DSS recently directed its counsel to seek an adjournment of the case against Sowore until after the 2027 presidential election.
The case arose from social media posts in which Sowore referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.” The DSS had pursued legal action over the posts, but recent reports said the agency decided to seek a pause in the proceedings to allow the AAC candidate to participate in the election process without the case becoming a hindrance to his political activities.
Sowore and his legal team, however, have criticised the proposed suspension, insisting that the case should be withdrawn rather than merely adjourned.
His lead counsel, Olumide Fusika, SAN, said the legal team was not formally notified before reports of the DSS decision emerged and called on the agency to either withdraw the charges or transfer the matter to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The planned tour is expected to provide Sowore with an opportunity to engage Nigerians living outside the country as the 2027 presidential campaign gathers momentum.
Sowore has built much of his political movement around calls for what he describes as revolutionary transformation, accountable government, equal rights and justice.
His campaign has repeatedly argued that Nigeria requires a fundamental break from what it considers the recycling of the country’s established political class.
The candidate’s movement is also expanding its digital and grassroots mobilisation structures ahead of the election.
The official SoworeNow campaign platform describes the movement as a people-powered campaign focused on grassroots organisation, mobilisation and political participation, while campaign activities have recently been reported in different parts of Nigeria.
For Sowore, the journey to North America will therefore combine family matters with political engagements.
His campaign insists that his physical absence from Nigeria will be temporary and that campaign structures will remain active nationwide.
