Former Rivers Military Administrator Begins New Diplomatic Mission as Nigeria’s Envoy to the Philippines
Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, former Military Administrator of Rivers State, has formally commenced his new diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to the Philippines.
Ibas presented his Letters of Credence to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at Malacañang Palace, formally accrediting him as Nigeria’s representative to the Southeast Asian country. Reports indicate the presentation took place during a ceremony in Manila.
Ibas was among 11 newly appointed Nigerian envoys whose credentials were presented in preparation for their diplomatic assignments. He was designated to serve as Nigeria’s envoy to the Philippines, with concurrent accreditation to Cambodia.
His appointment represents a major transition from a distinguished military career into Nigeria’s diplomatic service.
Before his diplomatic appointment, Ibas served in several senior positions within the Nigerian military and was appointed Military Administrator of Rivers State during the military era. He later became Chief of Naval Staff, further establishing his profile as one of Nigeria’s senior retired military officers.
The former naval chief is now expected to represent Nigeria’s interests in the Philippines, with his diplomatic responsibilities including strengthening bilateral relations, promoting economic and investment opportunities, protecting Nigerian interests and citizens, and deepening cooperation between both countries.
The Federal Government has previously charged the newly appointed heads of mission to focus on investment promotion, trade expansion, national security, protection of Nigerians abroad and citizen-focused diplomacy. Their performance is also expected to be assessed against specific targets under their respective diplomatic missions.
Ibas had earlier spoken on behalf of the newly appointed envoys after they received their credentials in Nigeria, saying they understood the responsibilities attached to their appointments and would work to protect Nigeria’s reputation internationally.
His presentation of credentials in Manila now formally places him at the centre of Nigeria-Philippines diplomatic engagement.
The Philippines is an important partner for Nigeria in Southeast Asia, and the new Nigerian mission is expected to explore opportunities in trade, investment, education, security cooperation, technology and people-to-people relations.
The diplomatic assignment also comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to make its foreign missions more focused on economic diplomacy and measurable national benefits.
