EBONYI: UMAHI’S 28-YEAR-OLD SON SWORN IN AS OHAOZARA LGA CHAIRMAN

OSBORN UMAHI TAKES CHARGE OF COUNCIL AFTER WINNING AUGUST 22 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION

Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of the Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator David Umahi, has officially assumed office as Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Umahi was sworn into office on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following his victory in the local government election held across Ebonyi State on Saturday, August 22.

The swearing-in ceremony attracted political leaders, government officials, supporters and other dignitaries, including his father, Senator David Umahi, who attended the event as a special guest.

Photographs from the ceremony showed the young council chairman taking the oath of office and later interacting with political leaders and other dignitaries.

Osborn Umahi contested the Ohaozara chairmanship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and emerged as chairman-elect following the August 22 poll.

His emergence has attracted attention because of his age and political background as the son of one of Ebonyi State’s most influential political figures.

At 28, Osborn Umahi is now responsible for the administration of Ohaozara Local Government Area and is expected to oversee grassroots governance, local development programmes and the delivery of basic services to residents of the council.

His swearing-in formally marks the beginning of his tenure as the elected chairman of the local government.

The development also places the younger Umahi in a political position that comes with significant responsibilities, particularly at a time when Nigerians are increasingly demanding stronger accountability and better performance from local government administrations.

The new chairman will be expected to work with councillors, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil servants and residents to address the developmental needs of communities across Ohaozara.

His supporters have described his emergence as an opportunity for a younger generation to take greater responsibility in grassroots politics and governance.

However, as with any political appointment or election involving a prominent political family, his administration is also likely to attract close public scrutiny.

The fact that Osborn Umahi is the son of the Minister of Works means that his performance in office will be watched not only within Ohaozara but across Ebonyi State.

His father, David Umahi, served as Governor of Ebonyi State before joining the Federal Government as Minister of Works. His long political career has made the Umahi family a major force in Ebonyi politics.

The younger Umahi’s entry into elective office therefore represents another significant development in the political career of the family.

His victory came through the APC, the same political platform on which his father currently operates at the federal level.

The Ohaozara council chairman is expected to now move beyond the politics of the election and focus on governance.

Among the issues likely to shape his administration are rural roads, healthcare, education, youth empowerment, agriculture, security, sanitation and access to other basic services.

Local government remains the closest level of government to ordinary Nigerians, making the effectiveness of elected council officials particularly important to communities.

For residents of Ohaozara, the major test will not simply be the political significance of his election but what his administration delivers during his tenure.

The swearing-in also brings to an end the immediate electoral process that began with the August 22 local government poll.

Osborn Umahi is now expected to settle into office and begin working with the local government bureaucracy and relevant stakeholders on his administration’s programmes.

The new chairman’s age has also placed him among the younger elected political office holders in the country, with his supporters likely to see his emergence as evidence that young Nigerians can take up leadership positions.

At the same time, his political background means that his administration will be expected to demonstrate independence, competence and accountability.

For the young chairman, the challenge is now clear: to transform electoral victory into effective grassroots leadership.

The people of Ohaozara will ultimately judge his administration by its performance, not simply by his family name or political connections.

With his swearing-in completed, Osborn Umahi has officially taken over the leadership of Ohaozara Local Government Area and begins what could become an important chapter in both his political career and the wider political story of the Umahi family in Ebonyi State.
