NEW DELTA POLICE BOSS PROMISES STRONGER SECURITY, INTELLIGENCE-LED OPERATIONS AND FRESH OFFENSIVE AGAINST CRIME

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, psc, mnips, as the 25th Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, marking a major leadership change at a time when the state continues to demand stronger security coordination, intelligence-led policing and effective crime prevention.
CP Erale formally assumed duty on August 31, 2026, succeeding CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, who previously headed the Delta State Police Command.
The new Commissioner of Police is an indigene of Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State and was born on March 2, 1968, at Pedro Police Barracks, Shomolu, Lagos State.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, which he obtained in 1992.
CP Erale joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a member of Course 18 Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police and has since built a career spanning more than three decades of operational, administrative, investigative, tactical and command responsibilities.
His policing career began in Kogi State Command before his professional assignments took him through several commands and formations across Nigeria, including Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Osun and Kogi states, as well as Zone 7 Headquarters and the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He also served internationally as part of the Nigeria Police contingent to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo in 2000, gaining experience in international peace-support operations and policing.
One of the defining features of CP Erale’s career has been his extensive service within the Police Mobile Force.
The new Delta CP spent approximately 14 years in the Police Mobile Force and served as a Squadron Commander for nine years, giving him substantial experience in tactical command, personnel management, crisis response and public safety operations.
Among his notable appointments were Personal Assistant to the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command; Personal Assistant to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 7, Abuja; Police Mobile Force Provost between 2004 and 2008; Squadron Commander, MOPOL 33, Ekiti State; Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Osun State Command; Chief Superintendent of Police, Promotions, Office of the Force Secretary; Squadron Commander, MOPOL 26, Akwa Ibom State; and senior investigative and operational positions within the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja.
He also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Bayelsa State Command; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ekiti State Command; Squadron Commander, MOPOL 33, Ekiti State, between 2019 and 2022; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration, Rivers State Command, between 2022 and 2026; and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Community Safety and Crime Prevention, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
His experience also includes service at the Special Investigation Unit of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, and the Office of the Force Secretary, where he served in the Promotions Section at different ranks.
Before his latest appointment, CP Erale served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Community Safety and Crime Prevention at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He was also deployed as Commissioner of Police in charge of elections during the recently concluded Osun State off-cycle governorship election, an assignment in which the police authorities described his operational role as significant to the security of the electoral process.
While carrying out the national assignment, he was appointed Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, in August 2026.
His professional training includes an Advanced Detective Course in 1999; Small Arms and Explosives Course at the International Law Enforcement Academy, Gaborone, Botswana, in 2005; Tactical Leadership and Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, in 2014; Peace Support Course at the National Defence College in 2015; and Strategic and Senior Command Course in 2021.
He also underwent several specialised MOPOL training programmes at Ila-Orangun, Osun State, and Ende Hill, Nasarawa State.
CP Erale is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and holds membership of the National Institute of Police Studies.
His extensive background in tactical operations, criminal investigation, administration, personnel management, community safety, international policing and command places him among officers with considerable experience across multiple areas of modern policing.
The new Commissioner assumes command at a time Delta State faces security challenges requiring coordinated responses from the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and residents.
His experience in tactical policing is expected to be particularly relevant in confronting violent crime, kidnapping, cult-related activities, armed robbery, communal disputes and other threats to public safety across the state.
The Delta State Police Command said CP Erale is a tested and trusted operational commander whose career has been characterised by professionalism, discipline, commitment to duty, operational leadership and the maintenance of public safety.
The Command is expected to work with relevant stakeholders to strengthen community policing, intelligence gathering and crime prevention while sustaining law enforcement operations across Delta’s urban centres, riverine communities, highways and other vulnerable areas.
As he takes over the command, residents and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the new Commissioner translates his extensive tactical and administrative experience into measurable improvements in security across Delta State.
For many Deltans, the expectation is clear: stronger intelligence, faster response to crime, better protection of lives and property, professional conduct by police personnel and a sustained offensive against criminal networks operating across the state.
CP Samuel Etaifo Erale is married and blessed with children. Outside policing duties, he enjoys badminton and brisk walking.
The new Commissioner has therefore inherited not only the responsibility of leading one of Nigeria’s strategically important State Police Commands but also the expectations of millions of residents seeking a safer, more secure and more professionally policed Delta State.
